Study on surface analytical techniques of electronic devices and functional materials by electron spectroscopy.

Surface analytical techniques are essential for analyzing of industrial materials and products at present. Auger and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(AES and XPS) are especially applicable to many materials. Using these techniques, we intend to analyze defects of electronic devices produced at some plants in Hokkaido. XPS is used for analyzing of surface state. In this study, correlations between efficiency of functional materials (thermoelectric devices and phosphors of rare earth elements) and their XP-spectra are also investigated, too.

4 Development and Application of New Materials, and the Effective Use of Local Resources

Characterization and application of functional polymer gels

The shape-memory polymer gel, which is a kind of the functional gels, not only softens rapidly at a transition temperature between 35 to 50 degrees Celsius, but also changes itself back to its initial shape. In order to apply this unique character to medical or industrial use, improvement and characterization of these functional polymer gels will be studied.

Study on improvement in yield of pyrolysis of waste plastics into fuel oil.

In order to aim at effective use of waste plastics from the agriculture and stock farming of Tokachi area, pyrolysis of polyethylene into fuel oil is examined. Pyrolysis products of polyethylene are heavy and easy to solidify in the shape of wax at room temperature. This cannot be used as fuel oil. The effect by addition of catalysts or solvents is examined in order to improve the yield of fuel oil.
